Lincoln came seemingly from out of nowhere to win the Republican Presidential nomination against rivals, more prominent and experienced, in 1860. To the surprise of many, he included these same vicious rivals in his cabinet when elected. Over time, the rivals, who once underestimated the prairie lawyer, came to recognize the political genius and leadership of the Lincoln.
